Digging Deeper | London Transport Museum

Elbow were invited to create an immersive audio visual experience for the London Transport Museum’s new ‘Digging Deeper’ gallery. The display explores the history of tunnelling in London; from the mid-19th century through to the recent construction of the Elizabeth line, highlighting how the tunnelling pioneers of the Victorian era would recognise many of the same engineering principles employed today. Working closely with the client team and exhibition designers, Elbow conceived of a circular projection surface to complement the tunnel structure of the proposed 3D design, which could at certain moments within the AV create a Trompe L’oeil effect, give a sense of movement through the tunnel itself, or switch to reveal the original diorama behind the projection gauze. This is complemented by further projections on the tunnel walls providing additional layers of interpretation to surrounding Museum objects.
